Ring me up
Hey everybody who's friended me and who checks their friends feed only! This is my first (and probably last) livejournal post. I have a situation that begs for the wisdom of the masses, and yet is not serious enough to warrant sending out an email. Here goes.

So AT&T, my new cell phone co., gave me credit for a free ringtone. This is great because I don't care for any of the pre-loaded ringtones, and have currently set my phone to "Old Telephone" (after a very scary incident with "Robot" when I thought the fridge was starting to talk to me). But "Old Telephone" often blends into the background, so I'd like something new. The problem is that AT&T's ringtones are the worst! If you have some free time, check it out.

Some things to consider:
1. I've never had a song as a ringtone.
     a. Will the song get caught in my head?
     b. If it's a song I like, will I eventually hate it?
2. Song must be easily heard in noisy environments.
     a. And not scary if I'm alone in the apartment.
     b. And not annoying for other people.
2. What does my song/noise choice say about me?
     a. I am dork, so it's okay if the song is a little dorky.
     b. Though I think I'd prefer something more obscure, so as to avoid point 1)a).

Right now I'm leaning toward the Deadwood theme. Or, alternately, forgetting about my free ringtone from AT&T and just making a ringtone of the old NBA on NBC theme.

What do you think, three people who magically found this entry?

I love everything about these concerns of yours.

I've had Lets Get It On as my ring for 5 years. I never get sick of it. The only thing that's weird is when it rings, and people hear it, and then I pick up and go "Hi, Dad." That's probably not cool. And whenever I'm in a store or something and it plays over the PA I get really confused.

I've always wanted the opening to Sweet Child Of Mine. I think you should think about whatever song you would want as your batters box music if you were a professional baseball player, and then go with that.

the oompa loompa ringtone has served me well, although i seldom have my phone set to make noise. people get really confused, which amuses me.

i agree with stix re: batters box music. although, clearly, i would not pick oompa loompas for such an ocassion, i would just like to point out.

My brother's ring tone was the opening bars of "Sweet Child O' Mine" for years, so I think of him when I hear it.

Maggie, I suggest the 30 Rock credits music.

Clever! However, I have started to worry that now that I'm getting into my mid-late-20s my Tina Fey lookalike/fandom is getting less charming and more sad. Am considering contacts, even.

I'm finding that my problem with picking a ringtone is that it's both personal (reflects ME) and public (must be heard by ALL). Tough line to balance.

This happens. My ringtone ("AM 180" by Granddaddy, aka, the song they listen to in the grocery store in 28 Days Later) wound up in the background of a car commercial, and every time it came on I thought my phone was ringing even though I knew it was just the TV. So I recommend something you don't come across very often in your day-to-day life. I'm also a big fan of songs without lyrics/where lyrics are secondary, because it's weird to have your phone sing to you.

PS: When I call my sister, the ring for me is "The Final Countdown" (GOB!) which makes me feel awesome, so that's a good one.

I vote for the NBA/NBC themes. Everyone will recognize it, but they won't realize what it is for a second or two. I, of course, had the Florida fight song as my ring tone for a while and loved it. Ah, nostalgia.
Or maybe you can get the first few guitar licks and cymbal crashes of the 90210 theme. That would ROCK.
